Why Does Music Stir Our Emotions? What Happens in the Brain

Pleasure, anticipation and personal experience: exploring brain research without mistaking it for evidence that a treatment works.

A song may accompany a celebration and, years later, bring to mind someone we miss. Sometimes we eagerly wait for a chorus; sometimes we prefer to turn the sound off. Asking why invites us to explore the brain while respecting each listener's history. A brain image alone cannot tell us what a piece of music means to a particular person.

This article opens a series inspired by questions raised in DW's documentary about music's influence. We distinguish three matters: experiencing an emotion, understanding a mechanism, and demonstrating that an intervention helps with a health need. They are connected, but each needs different evidence. Keeping them separate lets us engage with science without turning every finding into a promise.

Pleasure can begin with anticipation

Think of the moment just before a voice enters or a familiar melody returns. Expectation is part of the experience: we hear a sequence unfolding, rather than a collection of isolated sounds. As an everyday example, anticipating a pause can be as interesting as hearing what follows it. This observation does not require everyone to enjoy the same song.

In 2011, Salimpoor and colleagues combined brain imaging and bodily measures during intensely pleasurable musical experiences. The PET analysis included eight people selected for reliable musical chills. They found dopamine release in the striatum and differences between anticipation and peak emotion. The study examines musical reward; it does not show that every song produces the same effect or that listening treats an illness. Salimpoor et al., 2011.

Headlines sometimes describe dopamine as a supply of happiness we can refill. That metaphor oversimplifies the finding. Careful reading preserves the context: what people heard, how they were selected, which instruments measured their responses, and how long observations lasted. A change seen during one session does not automatically describe someone's well-being over several weeks.

A more direct experimental test

Observing two things together does not fully explain their relationship. When a brain image changes while someone enjoys music, several explanations remain possible. An experiment can try to alter one part of the process and observe what follows, under controlled research conditions. That asks a different question from whether a playlist is pleasant.

Ferreri and colleagues studied 27 healthy participants in three sessions using a dopamine precursor, an antagonist and a placebo, in a double-blind, within-participant design. The manipulations produced opposite changes in musical pleasure and motivation. The findings support dopamine's causal involvement in that experimental setting; they provide neither a drug recommendation nor a music treatment. Ferreri et al., 2019.

This distinction matters because a convincing explanation of a mechanism may still leave a clinical question unanswered. Assessing treatment requires defined goals, a comparison, meaningful benefits, risks and follow-up. Findings in healthy participants also cannot automatically be extended to every age or condition. Scientific curiosity becomes more precise when it identifies exactly which question an experiment answered.

Emotion has no single switch

Describing one music centre lighting up oversimplifies a complex activity. Koelsch's review discusses relationships between music-evoked emotions and several brain structures, including areas involved in reward, memory and emotional processing. It brings together evidence about mechanisms; it does not establish the effectiveness of any particular music therapy programme. Koelsch, 2014.

For someone seeking information, the useful question is not how many colourful regions appear in a figure. It is what researchers measured and which conclusion that measurement supports. An image can tell us something about brain function without showing whether someone sleeps better, participates more or needs less support. Those outcomes require their own observations and cannot be replaced by striking illustrations.

It also helps to distinguish perceived emotion from felt emotion. We might describe a song as sad yet value hearing it, or recognise a festive rhythm without wanting to celebrate. These are examples of questions about experience, not diagnoses. Instead of debating which reaction is correct, we can ask what the person felt and whether they want to keep listening.

Personal history belongs in the conversation

Imagine two people choosing music for a gathering. One connects a piece with travelling; the other connects it with a farewell. There is no need to decide that either person has misunderstood the music. The example shows why a respectful selection starts with listening to preferences and avoiding assumptions. Genre, artistic prestige and popularity do not establish how someone should feel.

An everyday reflection might begin by asking what you wanted when you put music on: company, energy, concentration or simple enjoyment. Afterwards, consider whether the experience matched that intention. This is neither a clinical assessment nor a way of measuring neurotransmitters. It is a way to describe your relationship with sound without assigning benefits you have not established.

If a piece feels uncomfortable, nobody has to persist in pursuit of a supposed health effect. Choosing silence, changing a song or expressing a limit also deserves respect.
